After months of being harassed, threatened, and intimidated by their landlords, activists associated with Keep Your Rent Toronto fought back. Tenants descended on Queen Park for a peaceful rally, then marched to the Landlord Tenant Board.
The tenants are demanding 2 things, the removal of rent arrears and that landlords stop seeking evictions. The activists claim that tenants have been unable to afford rent due to Coronavirus, and they deserve a break.
Several activists are associated with Parkdale Organize, a community based organization that has successfully fought back against greedy landlords on multiple occasions. They are so good at what they do, that mentioning their name brings dread to landlords.
Among the horrible claims tenants have made, the landlord of Crescent Town owns a “chain of care homes that were subject of the Armed Forces report.” This is just one of the many disturbing claims tenants have made in real life, and on Twitter.
This is not the first major action Keep Your Rent has made. Recently, they protested at the owner of Ranee Management’s house.
Keep Your Rent and the associated Parkdale Organize are experienced activists, and a force to be reckoned with. I’m confident that if neither FordNation, nor big landlords like Starlight start making concessions, these groups will undoubtedly escalate their actions. And they will win.
